How Essential Is A Laptop And Voice Recorder For Success In College?

I will be starting college tomorrow but I don’t have a laptop or voice recorder yet. If I need to take notes, I will have to do it, the old fashioned way by pencil and paper. Hopefully sometime later, I will get a laptop and voice recorder, but I’m just wondering if people use their laptop and voice recorder a lot in college.

I am buying a laptop today, and I want a laptop that is fast, can run multiple programs, can play DVDs, and have lots of room to store music and pictures. Preferably if it is also under 1,000 dollars. Please help me out!

I don’t think I will be taking it with me to every class, but maybe to the library and of course the dorm and back home. So, what is the best size for me? Should I get something thin and light? Wouldn’t a bigger screen size make it easier on the eyes? Also, the laptop will act as both a laptop and desktop for me since I wont’ be at home. What are the basic features that I would need in a laptop?

I would like to know what laptop/notebook is the best a college student. I probably need a lot of memory on it and it should be able to fit in a back pack without being to heavy. Also do colleges make you have a certain laptop/notebook? I am going to a community college, would it matter?

I am going to college this fall (leaving in 1 week!) and I will be buying a new laptop for college. What laptop is best? I am particularly looking for one with a lot of memory, good wireless internet and (hopefully) less than $1,000.
The $1,000 price range is flexible but not by much.
Any help/comparisons between laptops you can recommend will be helpful.
